Martin Lavender a.k.a ‘Lord Lav’ is a Rapper, Producer, Turntablist and all round renaissance Hip Hop Artist from Southampton, south coast of the UK.

Lord Lav has been a fan of Hip Hop since the age of 6, but it wasn’t until the age of 19, that he actually took his enthusiasm for the music that bit further and started Rapping himself.  His interest in Rapping soon spilled over into all the other musical forms of Hip Hop culture, becoming equally skilled in the art of Turntablism and music Production.

The name Lord Lav came about due to his nickname, a shortened version of his surname, ‘Lav’.  Martin put the title ‘Lord’ in front of his name as a kind of parody and juxtaposition, for all things upper class and quintessentially English.   Lord Lav himself being very much from a middle-working class background, rather than the ‘silver spoon’ background, a name with the title, ‘Lord’ might suggest.

An energetic and multi-faceted individual.  You will often see Lord Lav dressed in a Hip Hop-esque attire, wearing a silver visor beanie, leather jacket and baggy jeans.  But in the same week it is not unlikely to see Lord Lav sporting a very ‘Lord of the Manor’ style attire such as a tweed suit.  This same multi-faceted nature and versatility can also be heard in his music.  Though he tends to sway more towards putting his songs in a Rap/Hip Hop context he takes from a broad and diverse range of musical tastes and influences from Jazz, Psychedelic Rock and Funk, to House, Garage, Dub Step and even Folk.  The subject matter in his songs also show versatility, going from deep, introspective and melancholy, the likes of ‘Hate Myself Today’.  To more upbeat, light hearted and comical songs the likes of ‘Cyder Attack’.
